From Zinc-Phosphate to Zirconium Oxide – Picking the Right Coat

Fall is upon us, which means soon we’ll be scrambling for our winter coats to see if they’re in good enough shape to make it another season. Just like the fact that you want to buy a winter coat that will be high quality to last more than a season, you want your car’s exterior to stay protected as well. How can you make sure it does? Choose a ‘coat’ that uses the right technology and meets your lightweighting needs. 

Traditionally, zinc-phosphate pretreatments have had the responsibility of keeping our car exteriors in tip top shape. Unfortunately, this technology produces a lot of sludge while using heavy metals, neither of which are good for the environment. Additionally, it is a complex process when trying to coat high amounts of aluminum.

As a result, Henkel developed the BONDERITE® M-NT 1800™ series zirconium oxide coating to ensure optimal paint adhesion and corrosion protection, while decreasing sludge and other environmental hazards during the processing up to 100 percent aluminum. Due to the fact that the technology runs at room temperature, the pretreatment bath doesn’t need to be heated, saving energy, which saves time during production. With all these factors combined, the cost savings can be huge for users, at a whopping 25 percent. 

Because BONDERITE® M-NT 1800™ series is formulated for processing high  aluminum content, it contributes to overall mass reduction enabled by the increased use of this light metal. This keeps the car’s ‘coat’ light but durable, just like the best fall or winter coats. . In fact, two major OEMs in North America and nine million cars (so far) have implemented this technology, with no corrosion issues indicated.
