Five New Ways LEDs are Being Used to Improve Everyday Life
Now that LED lighting has been embraced around the world as a smarter, lower-cost and more environmentally responsible alternative to incandescent lighting, businesses and public sector entities are finding new and creative ways to maximize its benefits.
What type of projects will impact luminaire design and LED assembly in 2016 and beyond? Here are a few of the more interesting applications that are already changing our perception of darkness and light.
Cities like Los Angeles and Copenhagen are now being illuminated by LED lighting in smart light poles connected to a sophisticated LTE mobile network. The same LTE used for communication of high-speed data in mobile phones and data terminals is bringing improved broadband connectivity to communities, as well as future-ready infrastructure, via street lamps that, for more than a century, were equipped with just two settings: on and off.
You may not think about the type of lighting that allows you to shop in stores after dark, but retailers have found that high quality LED lighting accomplishes more than helping customers to read a price tag. Some types of LED luminaire design can create a more pleasant and comfortable interior retail environment, which encourages shoppers to stay longer. It can also enhance a customer’s perception of merchandise quality and value.
A golf course in Turkey has installed 120 light poles containing a total of 370 LED lights on nine of its 18 holes, allowing players to tee it up even after the sun goes down. This type of project is more difficult than it sounds, as light creates shadows that could hinder visibility, as well as glare that can make it difficult to track a golf ball in the air. But by using topographical maps, they pulled it off, and such successes could lead to more nighttime golf. That is great news for golf courses looking to increase revenues, as well as golfers who work 9-5 and can now fit in a quick round after quitting time.
Studies have found that a person’s sleeping schedule can be hindered by a glowing smartphone screen, suggesting a connection between types of light and how people sleep (yes, even though most of us sleep with the lights off). There are now LED bulbs that automatically adjust interior light levels for morning, afternoon and evening, to coincide with your daily routine. Different light color temperatures help to regulate the body’s production of the hormone melatonin, which affects alertness – something we need a lot of in the morning and less at night.
Ever been on a divided road where oncoming cars have their high beams on, obstructing your view? Auto manufacturers are aware of the issue, and some are moving toward installing an adaptive driving beam headlights control semiconductor into an LED headlight. This shuts off parts of the lighting beam area, illuminating the road for the driver while eliminating glare for oncoming vehicles.
