10 Essential Dirt Bike Maintenance Tips from Jeremy McGrath

    September 8, 2015

How does someone get to be an icon in dirt bike racing? For Jeremy McGrath, it helps to win seven Supercross titles – an achievement that may never be equaled, as well as more than 70 races. But when it comes down to it, Jeremy might not have had quite as much success if his bikes weren’t meticulously maintained.

Throughout his career, Jeremy has relied on LOCTITE®. I asked him for 10 of his best maintenance tips – ideas that can also help keep your motorcycle in proper working condition even if you never ride in the X Games. Because, as you know, whether you’re getting big air or riding a tough rythm section, you need to be sure your bike is going to hold up.

Now over to Jeremy:

  1. LOCTITE®  Natural Blue® Biodegradable Cleaner & Degreaser is the perfect solution to apply before washing your motorcycle. This product is concentrated and I have found it to work best diluting it 10:1.

  1. LOCTITE Blue 243™ Threadlocker should always be used for all aluminum parts, such as triple clamps, levers and shifters.

  1. LOCTITE Red 272™ Threadlocker should be used for all other steel applications, such as the sprocket or skid plate.

  1. Always lube your drive chain and cables with LOCTITE® LB 8421™ Gear, Chain and Cable Lubricant between rides. This will ensure the longest life and strength of these parts.

  2. Always clean your chain and sprocket after a day’s ride with LOCTITE® Pro Strength Parts Cleaner (item number 30548).

  3. Use LOCTITE® LB 8529™ White Lithium Grease on axles, wheel bearings, seals, suspension linkage and headset.

  4. LOCTITE® Silicone Spray is the perfect lubrication for levers, foot pegs and the kick starter.

  5. Use LOCTITE® Non-Chlorinated Parts Cleaner (item number 30545) on your brake rotors between rides for the best stopping power.

  6. LOCTITE® LB 8423™ Dielectric Grease should be used between the spark plug and cap as well as all wire connections.

  7. Using LOCTITE® Anti-Seize between the spoke and nipple will allow for easier adjusting and tightening for the life of your wheel. It will also prevent rust that over time will weaken the support of the wheel. It should also be used on all header and exhaust bolts for easier removal. Another good location is the bolts that adjust your chain on the swing arm.

Bonus Tip!
Hand wipes are a must for any garage. We keep LOCTITE® Industrial Hand Wipes (item number 34944) in the semi, garage or on the tailgate of the truck. They are pre-moistened and take all the grease and grime off your hands with one towel. It’s the perfect way to clean up after a day of riding and working on your bike.

I hope you can use these maintenance tips to keep you riding safe and your motorcycle in the best working condition. Have fun at the track or on the trail!
